Insulin secretion in heart failure.

چکیده
Insulin secretion tests were carried out before and after treatment in patients with severe congestive heart failure. Before treatment the plasma insulin level and the insulin secretion response to intravenous tolbutamide were significantly reduced in all patients. In patients who made a good clinical recovery the plasma insulin level and the insulin secretion response were significantly improved. Patients who had a poor response to medical treatment showed little improvement in their insulin secretion test. This suppression of insulin secretion is probably due to the reduced blood flow to the pancreas together with a high level of circulating catecholamines.

Autonomic control of insulin secretion and the treatment of heart failure.
To investigate the role of the autonomic nervous system in controlling insulin secretion 13 normal subjects and 5 patients with heart failure underwent insulin secretion tests. Alpha-adrenergic stimulation and beta-receptor blockade significantly depressed the secretion of insulin in response to intravenous tolbutamide in normal subjects, while both alpha-blockade and beta-stimulation significa...
متن کاملHeart rate in relation to insulin sensitivity and insulin secretion in nondiabetic subjects.
OBJECTIVE Elevated heart rate has been predictive of cardiovascular disease and has been proposed as a global index of the autonomic nervous system influence on the heart. Hyperinsulinism has been shown to trigger sympathetic activity experimentally; however, the clinical and epidemiological data on the association of heart rate with hyperinsulinism and insulin resistance are conflicting. RES...

Background: Glucokinase serves as a glucose sensor in pancreatic β-cells and plays a key role in glucose homeostasis and glucose-stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS). In the present study we examined the effect of glucosamine, a glucokinase inhibitor, on the pancreatic glucokinase and hexokinase activities and on insulin secretion from freshly rat pancreatic islets of Langerhans. Insulin concen...
متن کاملGlucose Homeostasis, Pancreatic Endocrine Function, and Outcomes in Advanced Heart Failure
BACKGROUND The mechanisms and relevance of impaired glucose homeostasis in advanced heart failure (HF) are poorly understood. The study goals were to examine glucose regulation, pancreatic endocrine function, and metabolic factors related to prognosis in patients with nondiabetic advanced HF. METHODS AND RESULTS In total, 140 advanced HF patients without known diabetes mellitus and 21 sex-, a...
متن کاملCalcium and Membrane Potential Oscillations in Pancreatic - Cells
We study pancreatic -cells because of their role in diabetes, a deadly derangement of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. Their function is to secrete insulin in response to elevations of glucose in the blood plasma, as after a meal. Insulin signals the target tissues (muscle, liver, and adipose cells) that glucose is available for use as a fuel or for storage as glycogen or fat. Later, as plasm...
